I read an article about how Oak Park, IL’s bureaucracy basically screwed over a family that was trying to recover after a fire to their home. After the Dec. 7, 2016, fire the owner got the ball rolling for rebuilding for him and his family. The owner’s contractor has made mistakes in the plans however in this process, Oak Park, IL uses a third-party vendor to (as they imply) streamline the application and approval/rejection.
So, after the owner got a rejection on the March 22 it was resubmitted then on April 27 the third party approved the application and gave a permit. Only to have it rejected by the village’s building department the next day, meaning that these two segmented departments that one gives the so-called approval process to the other only to have the first department override the latter. That seems to me like Organizational dysfunction, which is what this is.
Regardless of the whole story as mentioned in the article, however, the point is, that even after the situation was mentioned (about the fire) one of the village building representatives stated that once they knew the situation, it got fast forwarded. However, another one, the director of development customer services, stated that all cases (no matter the circumstances) are managed “in the same queue” and that the owner could have paid a double fee to get himself pushed up to the front of the line. NICE.
I can really, feel the empathy from the director of what???? “development customer services” to justify the dysfunction with you can be double charged, even after your fire, a fee to lead probably more dysfunction…. just so ignorant. Oh and the Oak Park Chief Building Official stated that only two or three new construction projects are “done” a year….. I see why due to all the red tape residents must go through for their construction projects who the fuck would bother? Unless they were backed with a developer and tons of money to grease the wheels further like the projects downtown, people like this unfortunate owner get the runaround and ignorance thrown at them.
Oh, I did note in this article the village representatives mentioned that the owner’s architect could have come into the village in person to “work out the problems” sounds like under the table, corruption type shit to me. Why? Because if they can email the plans to the third-party vendor as the Oak Park representatives mentioned in the article why could they not email the architect about the problems with the plans?
This to me is a great reason why not to buy property within Oak Park, Il there is crazy restrictions, red tape and corruption all over this village. The residents obviously put up with it and keep voting corrupt officials who perpetuate this situation and with them being part of the problem, I am sure that what happened to this homeowner has happened before and will again.
