One Stop Comics needs our support revisited

I made a web page about this subject, but I felt it was important to repeat, that one of our local staples in the village One Stop comics has started a Go fund me page to help balance out the cost of closing during the pandemic.

Without any new comic books to sell, and not being considered an essential business, the cost of having a physical store without new product to sell is extensive. One Stop Comics is a true small business story of a guy doing what he loves and making it work for decades while becoming a fabric of the local community. In fact, his store is always full during free comic day. Where he tries to engage each customer (as he always does) and help cultivate the kids’ interest in reading during this annual event.

Now, due to the coronavirus expenses are added up and to save this institution there is a go fund me page to help assist this Oak Park, IL institution stay alive. Not only is a great place to visit but being a fellow Cubs fan, it is a great place to talk sports and comics. So, donate and/or spread the word to help this institution:

Free Comic Book day in Oak Park, IL …fucking yuppies

So I goes to enjoy free comic book day with the nephew this past Saturday, and take him to the local spot in Oak Park, Il probably one of the better places in the City: One Stop Comics. The main guy there, Rick helped me once when I was trying to figure out what to buy my nephew who loves the Avengers’ and Captain America movies. Plus, I am always trying to make sure he reads a lot so that he does not become another statistic who cannot read jack.

Judging by the foot traffic on free comic book day this is a big day for the store and they offer one free book per customer, then two free books if you buy something and three free books if you buy over $20. I love getting something “free” however I am not one of those people who does not know marketing and economics the books must come at a cost to the store and as a local I want to make sure I do my part and buy $20 plus of books to not only get the maximum of free books but support a local business.

I know, where is the bitching about anything or something? The problem was, of course, the yuppie ass parent who just came into the business to get a free comic book and leave. Yup, saw it myself, as we were trying to get to the free book display, there was a crowd of parents simply standing there, talking. Just motherfucking talking. Not getting a book and then finding some additional items to accompany the free gift this store was giving away, not trying to spend a couple of bucks to keep this business open for the next free comic book day.

Just standing there in the fucking way, I literally had to get in the personal space of three different parents like they dropped the soap in prison to have them acknowledge they were in the way! “sorry!” Come on you know this is not the place to have a PTA meeting take that to Starbucks, and leave the free comic books for the people who love comic books like my nephew and put a couple bucks into the local businesses in the village. What burns my ass, even more, is that these are the same people who will whine that there are no small businesses in the area and all the big box, big chain companies are taking over and changing the aesthetics and culture of this village. Well, how are small businesses supposed to exist if you only take from these businesses and do not put the dollars back into the community and businesses like this one? Anyway, Free Comic book day is great so go to a local comic book store and get a free book for the kids or yourself but then spend a couple of dollars so they stay open and can stay a fixture in the community.
